The History of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church
Down through the many years, God has richly blessed Mt. Pisgah with an illustrious church history. The first church services were held in the Bush shelter near the Sand Bed area; later was donated by the late Currie and Gregg families to build a church to be used for worship services and burial ground. But because of the high water table, it could not be used for burial at that time.
The Reverend E. Rainey Roberts, who was the Leader/Pastor at Trinity Baptist Church from 1884 to 1901, saw a need for another church because families with poor transportation could not attend church when the weather was bad. Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church was established in 1896 with the Reverend Lazarus Smart as its first Pastor.
The Reverend Smart would drive out to Mt. Pisgah and conduct worship services on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. Some of the families living in this area; Brockingtons, Cannons, Charles, Daniels, Deas, Dr. Iola Jones, Edwards, Gurleys, Johnsons, Lukes, Mumfords, Planters, Roberts, Sanders, Wallaces, and Wrights.
The second Pastor of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church was Reverend Dorsey Johnson, a homeboy from a family of successful ministers who served the church well during his tenure as he attempted to maintain a stable church home and bring souls of the righteous to the vineyard.
The third Pastor was Reverend Dan Robinson a great evangelist. He was widely known among those he served as a devoted Christian, a gospel preacher and a successful Pastor. The late Reverend Columbus Black Sr., was the fourth Pastor. He served Mt. Pisgah for twenty years or more and many constructive programs were organized during his tenure of service. Reverend Black was well known in the community as well as throughout the Pee Dee area. He was a Christian hearted man and a gospel preacher.
Our fifth Pastor was Reverend Clinton Brantley, a Christian man, a dynamic speaker, a spiritual leader and a great gospel singer. Under his leadership, the church membership grew tremendously. Reverend Theodore (Ted) Williams was the sixth Pastor. He did not serve long but he served willingly and worked to enhance the church and the community.
The seventh Pastor was the Reverend Columbus Black Jr. He followed in his father's (Rev. C.B. Black Sr.) footsteps preaching the gospel and leading the congregation to higher heights. Many church improvements were done under his leadership. Mt. Pisgah's eighth Pastor is the Reverend Bennie King Jr., who served as church musician for many years before being called by God into the ministry. Under the leadership of Pastor King, Mt. Pisgah was stationed, an educational wing and fellowship hall was erected, and many church ministries were established.
We pray that God will continue to bless us here at Mt. Pisgah as we continue to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.
